I Got a Woman

Nicolas Jaar

The Gentlemen’s Forum Top 15 Songs of 2011

#14- Nicolas Jaar - I Got a Woman

Missing Nicolas Jaar’s set at the Electric Zoo was probably the biggest mistake I made in the last few months. During the hyperactive frenzy which was the Zoo this past September, Jaar was vibing out with a live band and from what I’ve heard, put on the best show all weekend. His 2011 album, Space Is Only Noise has received accolades throughout the blogosphere including a raving review in Pitchfork. “I Got A Woman” takes the ol’ Ray Charles classic and flips it so damn soulfully that I think Kanye West might even be a bit jealous. Enjoy.

Rest In Peace Christopher Hitchens, 1949-2011

(CNN) — Christopher Hitchens, the prosaic essayist whose pungent social commentary delighted his fans, enraged his detractors and engaged the legion of readers who devoured his work, has died from complications of esophageal cancer. He was 62.

“There will never be another like Christopher,” said Vanity Fair magazine editor Graydon Carter, who called him “a man of ferocious intellect.”

“Those who read him felt they knew him, and those who knew him were profoundly fortunate souls.”

Regarded as one of the English-speaking world’s great public intellectuals, Hitchens, who died Thursday, churned out literary criticism and tackled societal and political topics in magazines and books.

He wrote wry monthly columns for Vanity Fair. He penned articles for the New Statesman, the London Evening Standard, London’s Daily Express, The Nation, Harper’s, The Spectator, The Times Literary Supplement, New York Newsday, The Atlantic and Slate.

Known for his hard drinking and smoking, Hitchens “was as vibrant on the page as he was at the bar,” Carter said.

Hitchens became a strong voice for atheism and a strident critic of religion, writing a book called “God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything.”

As Hitchens went through his public battle with cancer, he went on talk shows and participated in lectures and debates where he defended atheism and vigorously took on religion.

“Humanity has lost a powerful stalwart for atheism,” said Roy Speckhardt, executive director of the American Humanist Association. “Christopher Hitchens changed the discussion about religion and nonbelief by championing public criticism of theology.”

Over the years, Hitchens had been solidly on the political left, but his beliefs couldn’t be neatly categorized. He became supportive of the war in Iraq because of what he saw as the dangers of radical Islam. As his condition worsened, he kept on producing lucid material.

Born in Portsmouth, England, in 1949 and graduated from Oxford University in 1970, Hitchens eventually settled in the United States and became an American citizen.

He landed a job with Vanity Fair as a contributing editor in November 1992.

“Christopher was a master of the stunning line and the biting quip, and he had few equals in the sphere of commentary, let alone social life,” a Vanity Fair statement said.

Christopher Hitchens was an all around guy. Who else would you want to talk to about how overrated Ronald Reagan with? Who else would you rather talk to about free speech with? Who else would you rather speak to about the decline of Western society through the lens of reality television with? And who else would you want to talk about these topics with all while downing a bottle of Jack Daniels and chain smoking cigarettes? I once heard him defend his lifestyle in an interview from last year saying that he indulged in the “Bohemian Lifestyle” all just to prolong the night, to enhance the moment, and to get the most out of people and himself. For Hitchens it was all about the conversation.

Whether you found Hitchens arrogant, offensive, or charming, you had no choice but to listen to the man speak. The following conversation was about comedy, and why in his opinion, women have no part in it. Rest in Peace.

Blow My High (Members Only)

#15- Kendrick Lamar - Blow My High (Members Only)

Today is December 15th so from now until 2012 arrives we will post the top songs of the year. Kendrick Lamar dropped his debut full length album in July and proved he was a name to remember. The album was smooth as Lamar Odom’s skull and spawned a couple of hits, including “hiiiPower” and “A.D.H.D.” But when it comes to straight chill out music, which was the flavor of the year, you can’t deny this track. Here is “Blow My High.”

Purp Drank Shawne Williams Signs With Nets

Shawne Williams is headed to the Nets after rejecting an opportunity to re-sign with the Knicks, The Daily News has learned.

Williams reportedly signed a two-year deal worth $5 million after reviving his career last season under Mike D’Antoni and Donnie Walsh. Williams was also popular in the locker room and became close friends with Amar’e Stoudemire.

Missing out on Williams is the Knicks’ second airball this week. On Wednesday, Jamal Crawford turned down a one-year $2.5 million offer from the Knicks.

Williams, 25, will see plenty of playing time with the Nets, whose roster is in need of Band-Aids after they missed out on top free agents while pursuing Dwight Howard.

The Knicks screwed this one up. Shawne Williams, besides bringing tremendous swag to the court, also hits open threes and defends very well off the bench. These are traits hard to come by in the NBA and kudos to the Nets for realizing this. Shawne’s two year deal means he’ll most likely be a part of the team when Jigga and Russian Presidential candidate Prokhorov move the team to Brooklyn in the fall of 2012. At least Purp Drank is staying in the NYC area. In honor of Williams’ time with the Knicks, here is a syrupy ballad.

Action Bronson- Barry Horowitz

Action Bronson is a beast. As the year comes to a close I will be posting some of the years best music. This is round one. His debut Dr. Lecter was released in March of 2011 and the single “Barry Horowitz” shows us that Queens and the golden age of Hip Hop may not be a thing of the past.

WTF: The Dictator

Aside from toeing the line of racism and appearing to be a grotesque version of Borat, the trailer to The Dictator has truly confused me. While I haven’t done the research to back this up, (mainly because I’m scared to find the answer) but is that really John C Reilly and Ben Kingsley? I never thought Sir Kingsley would stoop this low. And why would Sacha Baron Cohen do this? Shouldn’t he be too busy handling Isla Fisher? The best part about the entire trailer is Megan Fox, who probably didn’t have to stray too far from her own reality in accepting diamonds for sex. Hollywood is at an all time low.

Hipster Baron Davis Now Free Agent

As expected, Baron Davis has become the next victim in the NBA’s new amnesty circus according to the NBA’s official twitter feed. If I may say so, he’s looking like he can fit in perfectly into Mike Bloomberg’s hipsterific NYC. I predict the Knicks will make the call- very soon.

Finally: Chris Paul To Clippers

The Los Angeles Clippers have agreed to a deal in principle with the league-owned New Orleans Hornets to acquire guard Chris Paul, according to sources close to the process.

The Clippers, sources said, will send guard Eric Gordon, center Chris Kaman, forward Al-Farouq Aminu and Minnesota’s unprotected 2012 first-round pick to the Hornets for Paul.

The Clippers will also receive two future second-round picks, according to sources.

The deal is expected to be approved by the league Wednesday night, sources said.

There you have it folks, the Chris Paul saga has concluded. He is now a member of the Los Angeles Clippers, a team which could possibly usurp the Lakers as the City of Angels’ best team this season. With the Lakers having dealt Odom to the Champs for nothing and with the Orlando Magic taking Dwight Howard off the table, the Clippers are looking pretty good by comparison. Including Eric Gordon in this deal makes me cringe a bit since he was a third year undersized shooting guard who averaged 22.3 points a game last season, and that isn’t something you ever want to give up. In addition, they now have 3 pure point guards in Chauncey Billups, Eric Bledsoe, and Mr. Paul. We’ll see what they manage to do from now till Christmas.

Inside The Mind of Metta World Peace

Metta World Peace and his Los Angeles Lakers are hard at work every day in preparation for the new NBA season. Times are tough for the Lakers. Their front office inexplicably dealt Lamar Odom, last season’s sixth man of the year, to the defending champion Dallas Mavericks for a draft pick and some cash and it seems like most of the players aren’t taking it too well. Well, besides Mr. World Peace. He’s got other things on his mind.

Old Spice War Begins Today

So Fabio, the new Old Spice representative, challenged Isaiah Mustafa, the old Old Spice spokesman, to a duel. No one exactly knows what will occur during their “duel,” but that something is going to happen today at noon. Despite the fact that Mustafa changed Old Spice marketing forever and that this duel is being funded by Old Spice on both sides, it will still be hilarious.
